Can the 84-78 Dodgers really reach the World Series?
Ok, obviously they do have a chance simply because they are just one more series victory away from reaching a point that just flat out has been unthinkable since the infamous ‘88 World Series. Besides that, they have one thing on their side which is key to any postseason run. No, not Manny Ramirez! Mr. momentum. The Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles came into the postseason riding high finishing 19-8 in September (that could have easily been a 20-win month if they had not wrapped up the division with four games left and their opponents were the not-so-feared Padres and Giants). History proves that the Dodgers are quite capable of making it to the fall classic. The 2005 White Sox seemingly came from nowhere to knockout the defending champion Boston Red Sox in the first round and followed that up with a somewhat controversial 4-1 series win over the ANAHEIM Angels. They capped off that amazing run with a sweep against the Astros led by the strong pitching staff of Roy Oswalt, Roger Clemens, and Andy Pettitt. The list really goes on and on. the ‘03 Marlins, the amazing 83-79 Cardinals of ‘06. And most recently, the Colorado Rockies from just last season. Another NL west team came in storming to the playoffs on a run that was just ridiculous. They went into Philly (who was on a tear themselves) and swept them right out. It was not a very competitive series at all. You know, similar to the one played between the Dodgers and the Cubs just last week. Then, they played the Diamondbacks and rolled right over them like they were not even there and swept them. I’m not saying Los Dodgers are going to roll through the Phils just like Colorado did last season because I know Philly has probably learned from last year’s postseason disappointment, but, you have to love the Dodgers chances. Mr. Momentum is on their side. Oh yeah, and their pitching (best ERA in the National League this season) isn’t too bad either.
